If you’re shopping for cleaner indoor air, two filter types come up constantly: HEPA and activated carbon. They sound similar but do completely different jobs, and the right pick depends on what you’re trying to remove. Here’s the breakdown.
HEPA Filters: For Particles
HEPA filters are built to trap tiny airborne particles, including dust, pollen, pet dander, and mold spores, down to 0.3 microns. If your goal is fewer allergy triggers and cleaner-feeling air, HEPA is the standard. What they don’t do is remove odors or gases.
Carbon Filters: For Odors and Gases
Activated carbon filters work by absorption, pulling in smells, smoke, cooking odors, and chemical fumes. What they don’t do well is capture solid particles like dust and pollen.
So Which Do You Need?
It’s not really either/or. They solve different problems:
- Allergies, dust, pet dander, go HEPA
- Odors, smoke, chemical smells, go carbon
- Both concerns, many air purifiers combine the two
