Mold in an air conditioner is more common than people think, especially after a unit sits unused, and it’s not something to ignore. Black mold in an AC can release spores and even toxins into your air. Here’s how to handle it.
How to Tell If You Have Mold
The usual first sign is a musty smell that gets stronger when the AC kicks on. You may also spot black or green patches around the vents, coils, or housing, or notice worse allergy symptoms when the system runs.
Getting Rid of It
- Turn the unit off before you do anything.
- Remove and clean or replace the filter, since a moldy filter has to go.
- Clean accessible surfaces with a diluted vinegar or bleach solution, and let everything dry completely before reassembling.
- Don’t force it, the coils, blower, and ductwork are hard to reach and easy to damage.
When to Call a Pro
Surface mold you can see and reach is one thing. Mold deep in the coils, blower, or ducts needs professional cleaning, both to remove it safely and to keep it from coming back. You also want to fix whatever moisture problem let it grow.
