How to Clean a Window AC Without Removing It

Window AC units get surprisingly dirty, and a grimy one runs weaker, costs more, and can blow musty air. The good news is you can clean most of it without wrestling the unit out of the window. Here’s how.

What You’ll Need

A vacuum, a spray bottle, warm soapy water, a soft brush or old toothbrush, paper towels or cloths, and a fin comb if you have one. Always unplug the unit first.

Step by Step

  • Unplug it. Never clean a unit that’s still powered.
  • Remove and wash the filter in warm soapy water, then let it dry fully.
  • Pop off the front grille and vacuum out dust and debris.
  • Gently clean the coils and fins with the brush, and straighten bent fins with a fin comb.
  • Wipe down the interior and housing, and clear the drain channel so water flows freely.
  • Let everything dry, reassemble, and plug it back in.

Do It a Couple Times a Season

A quick filter rinse every few weeks plus a deeper clean a couple times a season keeps a window unit running efficiently and smelling fresh.
