You switch off your AC, but the fan keeps spinning. It’s a common head-scratcher, and while it’s sometimes harmless, it can also drive up your energy bill and signal a problem worth fixing. Here’s why your AC fan keeps running after the compressor shuts off.
Common Reasons the Fan Won’t Stop
The thermostat is set to “ON” instead of “AUTO”
This is the most common and easiest fix. On “ON,” the fan runs continuously even when the system isn’t cooling. Switch it to “AUTO” and it only runs during a cooling cycle.
A stuck relay or fan limit switch
A faulty relay can keep sending power to the fan after the compressor stops. This one needs a technician.
Wiring problems
Faulty or shorted wiring can keep the fan energized when it shouldn’t be, an electrical issue best left to a pro.
A failing thermostat
If your thermostat is malfunctioning, it may not be telling the fan to shut off properly.
Why It’s Worth Fixing
A fan that never stops runs up your electric bill and puts unnecessary wear on the motor, shortening its life. Start with the thermostat setting; if that’s not it, it’s likely electrical.
