You set the thermostat to cool, but warm air keeps pouring out of the vents. On a hot Spokane day, an AC blowing hot air is more than annoying, it’s a problem that needs sorting fast. Here’s why it happens and what to check.
The Most Common Causes
Low refrigerant from a leak
This is the top reason. Refrigerant is what actually removes heat from your air, so when a leak drops the level, the system can’t cool and you get warm air. The leak has to be found and sealed, not just topped off.
A thermostat set wrong
Sometimes it’s simple: the thermostat is set to “heat,” or the fan is on “ON” so it blows uncooled air between cycles. Always check the settings first.
A dirty filter or coils
Restricted airflow from a clogged filter or dirty coils can leave the system unable to cool effectively.
A failing compressor
If the compressor isn’t running, the outdoor unit can’t remove heat, and you’ll get room-temperature or warm air inside.
Lost power to the outdoor unit
A tripped breaker or electrical fault at the condenser means no cooling, just the indoor fan moving warm air.
What to Check Yourself
Confirm the thermostat is set to cool, replace the filter, and make sure the outdoor unit has power and is clean. If it’s still blowing warm, the cause is usually refrigerant, compressor, or electrical, all pro territory.
