It’s one of summer’s strangest problems: your AC ices over in the middle of the heat. A frozen unit can’t cool, and if you keep running it that way, you risk serious damage. Here’s why it happens and what to do about it.
What Causes an AC to Freeze in Summer
A clogged air filter
This is the most common cause. A dirty filter restricts airflow, so the coil gets too cold and condensation freezes into frost. Once it’s iced over, heat can’t escape and the system shuts down.
Low refrigerant
A refrigerant leak drops the pressure in the system, which makes the coil drop below freezing. This is a pro repair, the leak has to be found and sealed.
Poor airflow
Blocked vents, a failing blower fan, or dirty coils all reduce airflow and lead to freezing.
A dirty evaporator coil
A coil coated in grime can’t transfer heat properly and ices up.
What to Do Right Now
Turn the AC off and let it thaw completely, never chip at the ice, then switch the fan to “ON” to help it melt faster. Once it’s thawed, replace the filter and clear airflow. If it freezes again, there’s an underlying cause that needs a tech.
Stop It From Freezing Again
Repeated freeze-ups usually mean low refrigerant or a deeper airflow problem. Bearcat will find the cause and fix it so your AC stays cooling all summer. See our AC repair services, or call (509) 891-5110.
