Few things are more frustrating than an AC that shuts off on its own in the middle of a Spokane heat wave. Sometimes it’s an easy fix, sometimes it’s a warning sign. Here’s what’s usually behind an air conditioner that keeps turning itself off.
1. Thermostat Issues
Your thermostat is the brain of the system. If it’s miscalibrated, low on batteries, or failing, it can cut the AC off too early or misread the temperature. Check the settings and batteries first.
2. Overheating (Short Cycling)
When an AC overheats, it shuts down to protect itself. The usual causes are a dirty filter, blocked condenser coils, a failing fan motor, or low refrigerant, all of which make the system run too hard.
3. A Clogged Air Filter
A choked filter restricts airflow and is one of the most common triggers for short cycling. It’s also the cheapest to fix.
4. Dirty Condenser Coils
Coils caked in dirt can’t release heat, so the system overheats and trips off.
5. Low Refrigerant
A leak drops the refrigerant level, which can cause the system to cycle off unexpectedly. This needs a pro to find and seal.
6. Electrical Problems
Loose wiring, a tripped breaker, or failing connections can interrupt power and shut the unit down. Electrical faults are a job for a technician, not a DIY poke.
7. An Oversized Unit
An AC that’s too big for the home cools too fast and shuts off before it can run a full cycle, leaving your house clammy and the compressor stressed.
8. A Failing Compressor or Capacitor
A weak capacitor or struggling compressor can cause the system to stop and start. These are wear-and-tear parts that eventually need replacing.
Stop the Start-Stop Cycle
Short cycling wears your system out fast, so don’t let it ride. Bearcat will pin down the cause and fix it before it turns into a bigger repair. See our AC repair services, or call (509) 891-5110.
