Your AC filter is the first line of defense for both your air quality and your system’s health, but only if it’s clean. So how often should you actually clean or replace it? It depends on a few things. Here’s a simple guide.
The General Rule
For a standard 1-inch filter, check it monthly and replace or clean it every one to three months. During heavy cooling season in summer, lean toward the shorter end.
What Changes the Timeline
Pets
Dander and fur clog filters faster. With pets, monthly is a good target.
Allergies
If anyone in the house has allergies or asthma, a cleaner filter helps, so change it more often.
Filter type
Thicker pleated filters and whole-house media filters last longer (some up to several months), while cheap fiberglass ones need swapping sooner.
How hard the system runs
The more your AC runs, the faster the filter loads up. A Spokane summer of constant cooling means more frequent changes.
Clean or Replace?
Disposable filters get replaced, not cleaned. Only reusable or washable filters should be rinsed, and they must be fully dry before going back in or you risk mold.
Don’t Let It Slide
A clogged filter strains your system, raises your bills, and worsens your air. If you want it handled as part of regular upkeep, Bearcat’s maintenance covers it. See our AC maintenance services, or call (509) 891-5110.
